Linda Villumsen rode to a gutsy 23rd place in the demanding women’s cycling road race today.

Villumsen, who is one of the strong favourites for the time trial, opted to also give the road race everything she had and finished in 3h 56.34s, five minutes behind the winner.

In strong winds and facing some daunting climbs, it was 137km of hard slog, but Villumsen looked strong throughout.

The race turned into a thriller and Dutchwoman Anna van der Breggen came through over the last 100m to win a sprint finish in 3h 51min 27s.

There were 80 starters.
