Eve Thomas found herself outgunned by the powerhouse Australians, but swam a fine race to finish fourth in the women’s 800m freestyle.

Thomas, 21, recorded 8min 32.63s, nearly seven seconds faster than her qualifying time. The race was won by Ariarne Titmus in 8min 13.59s.

Hazel Ouwehand missed out on place in the women’s 50m backstroke final when she finished 10th overall in the semis in a time of 28min 85s. She had qualified ninth for the semi-finals with a heat time of 29.05s.

Cameron Gray also missed out on a place in the final when he finished 14th equal overall in the men’s 50m butterfly. In his semi-final he was timed at 22.77s, quicker than his morning qualifying time of 23.00s.

Andrew Jeffcoat, fresh from his gold medal triumph in the 50m freestyle, missed out on the men’s 200m backstroke final. His heat time of 2min 03.57s was only good enough for 11th.
