New Zealand featherweight boxer Alex Mukuka found himself up against a tough and calm customer in Ghanaian in Joseph Commey.

Though the 26-year-old New Zealander never stopped pressing forward looking to land a big punch, Commey was able to pick him off and build up points. Over the final stages of the third round Mukuka finally began to dent the Commey defence, but it was too late to sway the judges.

Mukuka, born in Zambia and now based in Matamata, bowed out of the competition in the quarter-finals. One more win would have made him a semi-finalist, with a medal guaranteed.
