Day three of competition at the Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games saw New Zealand’s curlers and ski racers in action.

It was a mixed bag for the curlers who breezed past Nigeria 12-1 in their morning match at the Gangneung Curling Centre.

The Nigerians have been one of the stories of the Games, having trained on carpet and never played on ice before arriving in Korea.

“It’s awesome that they’re over here, such cool experience for them and we really enjoyed playing them,” said Jack Steele.

In their second match of the day the Kiwis were drawn with Japan 1-all after four ends, but a bad end cost the New Zealanders with the team going down 6-2.

“It was really nice to get that first win this morning,” said Jack Steele.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t able to double up tonight. We’ve got a bit to work on in terms of shot execution but we had some good ends so we’ll take some positives form that.”

The curlers take on Norway tomorrow (January 23rd).

Hemi Meikle, Charlotte Wiggins and Ruby Fullerton were in action in Alpine Combined at Jeongseong Ski Resort.

Meikle recorded a DNF after hitting a gate at the top of his run, but Wiggins and Fullerton were solid through their runs. Wiggins posting a combined time of 1:57.04s for 27th and Fullerton 1:59.10s for 29th.

Tomorrow (January 23rd) will see the New Zealand Team competing in women’s giant slalom, curling and ski cross athlete Campbell Appel will make his debut.
