Kiwi triathletes Dylan McCullough and Brea Roderick have claimed New Zealand’s second medal of the Youth Olympic Games.
The pair teamed up with Australians Josh Ferris and Charlotte Derbyshire in the Oceania team for the mixed team relay.
Individual gold medallist McCullough took off on the second leg and made up a staggering 50 seconds, to put the ‘Kiwi-Roos’ in the lead, with the team eventually placing second.
“We put on our A-Game today and it paid off - silver, we’re stoked,” said McCullough.
16-year-old Roderick from Methven couldn’t hide her smile with a silver medal around her neck.
“We will always be connected, because of this,” Roderick said. “It just feels amazing and you feel so proud of everyone as a team.”
“I was feeling a lot of pressure, I didn't want to let my team down, so I just gave it my all.”
New Zealand also made a strong start in the discus with Connor Bell throwing a Youth Olympic Games record.
The 17-year-old managed a whopping 66.84-metres with his best throw to set the record in wet conditions in Buenos Aires.
“It’s a high-pressure zone and I was throwing in not ideal conditions but I did some really good throws and put my mark on the field early, then I loosened up and threw a bomb later,” said Bell.
The next best throw from other athletes was 57.30m, giving the Aucklander a lead of almost 10m.
At the Youth Olympic Games the discus is run across two days, with the athletes two highest throws added together to determine the winner.
Bell will compete again on Sunday (local time).
“The competition is still on, I’m calm and collected so it’s not over till it’s over.”
