Bailey Rogers did herself proud today with her effort in the 75kg weightlifting competition.

Rogers, 27, finished fourth in a field of 12. Her total was 204kg, which equalled the national record, left her 3kg adrift of third-placed Welshwoman Laura Hughes. The event was won by Emily Godley of England, who totalled 222kg.

Rogers didn’t have the most propitious of starts, missing her snatch twice at 88kg, but got it on her final lift. In the clean and jerk she missed at 112kg, then got it, then lifted 116kg, breaking the national clean and jerk record by 4kg.

In the same event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014, Rogers finished seventh with a total of 199kg.

Rogers said she was proud of her lifting today but felt she could have done better.

“Tonight has made me hungry to get to the next Commonwealth Games,” she said. “I was so close. There were missed opportunities out there.”
