Olympic benefactor, businessman and philanthropist Sir Eion Edgar has been awarded the title Senior New Zealander of the Year 2009. In addition to his substantial contribution to the worlds of business and arts, Sir Eion also has played a significant role in sports in New Zealand.

Sir Eion served on the New Zealand Olympic Committee board from 1997 before being elected President in 2003. Before resigning from his position in 2009 Sir Eion and Lady Edgar established the Edgar Olympic Foundation and made supported the inaugural 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games. Sir Eion was made a member of the Olympic Order in 2009.

New Zealand Olympic Committee Secretary General, Barry Maister, was delighted at Sir Eions award. Sir Eion has boundless energy that is continually put into making New Zealand a better place. He certainly made his mark on the Olympic Movement in New Zealand and it is fitting that he has been nationally honoured in this way.

Sir Eion is Chairman of Forsyth Barr, one of New Zealands leading investment houses, and has been formally recognised for his contributions to arts, business, education and the sporting community receiving the Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2003.
