The New Zealand Women’s Footballers have today become the New Zealand athlete to arrive at the Olympic Village in Tokyo.

The team were welcomed with a haka by team support and responded by singing ‘Don’t Forget Your Roots’ by Six60.

“That was a pretty special moment,” said defender Meikayla Moore.

“We’re really excited to be here and we can’t wait to start competition. Arriving at the village makes it feel more real, you can’t really put it into words, it’s awesome.”

Moore says the team are relishing being back together, following a lengthy Covid hiatus.

“We’re going really well, it’s the first time we’ve been together in 18-months so we’ve been making the most of it and training really hard as we work towards competition.”

Athlete arrivals ramp up tomorrow with the hockey, swimming, surfing, rowing and boxing teams arriving pre competition.

The footballers are the first athletes in action, taking on trans-Tasman rivals Australia on July 21st.
