Around 7,000 athletes and team officials have registered for the Commonwealth Games. The Delhi organisers had originally estimated that as many as 8,000 athletes and support staff could attend the games and the final figure of 7,000 is a reflection of the games programme and Commonwealth selection criteria. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) CEO Mike Hooper has confirmed that CGF estimates for the games have always been between 6500 and 7000 and were based on the numbers for Melbourne and took into account changes to the sports programme for Delhi. The New Zealand team size stands at 192. Four New Zealand athletes have been unable to attend the Delhi games due to either illness, for example squash player Shelley Kitchen, or heavy sport programmes that were not able to also accomodate the Commonwealth Games, eg Julian Dean.
