Final event of the PyeongChang Games

The last event of the PyeongChang Games wrapped up for the NZ team this evening with speed skaters Peter Michael and Reyon Kay competing in the Mass Start.

Reyon suffered a crash in semi-finals one while team-mate Peter won the second semi-final heat to progress through to the 16-man final. Both arcers came in to tonight's race aiming for top finishes.

"I wanted to attached straight away and see if I could get off the front," said Reyon. "I just hit the boot on the ice and went down, there was nothing I could do about it. I gave it my best to try and catch up but as soon as the front break got off the front, that was it. I'm pretty gutted."

Peter fought a tactical race to claim his spot in the finals.

"My speed is not quite as quick as some of the others so i was always looking to back end the race," he explains. "I realised the only chance to make the finals was to win the final sprint which was a little more stressful than I would have liked. I managed to squeeze through so that was a boost to the confidence."

On to the finals and the goal was clear.

"With my fourth places in the race prior I was just racing for a medal," said Peter. "I did want to get that chance so I positioned myself near the frontand tried to maintain a good position so that when the chance arose I could have a go. Turns out I waited a half a lap too late."

Peter finished in 15th place.
