The New Zealand Olympic Committee has celebrated international Olympic Day (June 23rd) with a ‘have a go’ sports day in Auckland today.

Around 100 children gathered at AUT Millennium to have a go at Olympic sports such as boxing, race walking and sprinting.

Olympians including boxer Alexis Pritchard, gymnast Courtney McGregor, racewalker Alana Barber and triathlete Evelyn Williamson, were on hand to provide additional encouragement and inspiration to the students.

Alana Barber says getting children active and having fun through sport is the perfect way to celebrate Olympic Day.

“Bringing people together is what the Olympic Movement is all about and it was great to see so many kids having a go at sport and making friends.”

“I was pretty impressed with some of the kids so you never know, there might be some future Olympians in that bunch.”

Other New Zealand Olympians were also out visiting schools around the country to mark the day. Skiier Beau James Wells visited Kaiapoi Borough School in Canterbury, heptathlete Sarah Cowley Ross visited Sacred Heart College in Wellington, weightlifter Richie Patterson visited Fairhall School in Blenheim, and hockey athlete Sam Charlton presented at Macleans Primary in Auckland.

The athletes spoke about their Olympic journeys and the Olympic values while encouraging the children to follow their passion.
