The Chileshe brothers were the only New Zealanders in action on the opening day of squash, and both had no trouble advancing in the men’s singles.

Younger brother Temwa was unhurried in beating Jules Snagg of St Vincent and the Grenadines 11-2, 11-3, 11-3. It’s always good to get through the first match unscathed, but Temwa might have benefited from a slightly sterner test.

However, he clearly enjoyed his first taste of the Commonwealth Games. “I feel great,” he said. “I was pretty nervous going in, but found my rhythm pretty early on and I just loved it. I’ve been here five days now, and it’s really sunk in. Being on the glass court in front of a good crowd - I’ve never had that before.”

Lwambe Chileshe, who is seeded in the 9-16 bracket, was similarly untroubled in beating Papua New Guinea’s Feanor Siaguru 11-4, 11-3, 11-4.
