On Day 5 of the Trinbago 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games, semi-final Beach Volleyball action unfolded at the Black Rock, Tobago.

The New Zealand Women’s Team consisting of the dynamic duo Tineke Hinton and Kiana Stevenson, kept spectators on the edge of their seats. The showdown against Tasman rivals was intense throughout, with Australia taking the win 22-20, 22-20.

Despite their impressive effort, the kiwi team fell just short of victory and elevation to the gold medal match. Coach Fiona Scrimshaw expressed a mix of disappointment and pride in her team’s performance.

“We’re pretty gutted, that would have been a nice feeling to get through to the finals, we had set point, I think we had the upper hand energy wise, just a few things didn’t go out way,” said Scrimshaw. It’s not where we want to be, but we are grateful we are still in the race, and the girls are going to want that hardware.”

The men’s team also faced a formidable challenge against England, with the match taking a similar competitive tone. The kiwi men displayed a high level of skill and determination but ultimately couldn’t clinch the victory, with a final score of 21-17, 21-19, in favour of England.

The teams will now move their focus towards their bronze medal matches tomorrow.
