Dick Johnstone represented New Zealand at two British Empire and Commonwealth Games - Cardiff 1958 and Perth 1962.  He also represented New Zealand at the Tokyo 1964 Olympic Games.

Growing up in Auckland, Dick's chosen sport was boxing and purchased a £5 bike to supplement his boxing training. It became apparent very quickly to the officials in cycling that Dick was very talented. Whilst out on his training rides, he was catching the bunches and was soon convinced to switch codes.
