Swimming

Laura Quilter has finished sixth in the womens 50m butterfly final, saying it was an exciting race where she could hear the noise from the Kiwi supporters in the stands.

"It was a great first time in a final, just not quite the result I was looking for.

Quilter had swum faster in the semi than she had in her heat, and says if she had swum faster still in the final, than she would have been happy.

However, she acknowledged that it was all a learning experience for her.

"Its quite exciting to take little bits back to work on in training . So its good experience.

Twenty-two year old Ewan Jackson improved on his best time in his 200m freestyle semi-final, narrowly missing out on a place in the final.

Jackson said he had mixed feelings about the race and was disappointed "not to scrape into that final, especially by such a small margin."

"I would have liked to crack 1.49 and go 1.48.

However, Jackson said he had improved on his personal best times twice which he was pleased about.

Jackson said he had come to the Games with the mentality of trying to "attack races and see what happens. Next up for Jackson is his favoured 400m freestyle event.

Rowing

The four New Zealand rowers competing at the World University Games had an outstanding first day of competition as all four moved through to the top 12 in the world in their respective events.

Adelle Stead qualified for the semi-finals through the repecharge with a third place in the women's heavy weight singles.

Coach Craig Smith said Adelle had to race twice in very hot conditions and achieved a personal best time in her repecharge. Monday's semi-finals require the rowers to finish in the top three to progress to the A final. "Overall they have performed exceptionally well in world-class competition, Craig says.

Gymnastics

Coach David Phillips says the World University Games is about experience for the gymnasts in the New Zealand team, with a view to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. This is Tim and Devys first international meet and David says all members of the team showed great character.

After day one of competition, David said:"We had some ripper routines, and some that wed rather forget! All the guys showed some fight and no one gave up when things didnt quite go to plan."

Day one involved floor, pommel and rings while day two saw the men gymnasts compete in vault, parallel bars and high bar events which had been going well in training.

David also says it has been great to get support from other Kiwi competitors in the crowd.Jordan Rae had done her beam routine and had just started her floor routine when injury struck.

Her leg has being put in plaster, and she'll be on a flight to Auckland as soon as possible, accompanied by coach Mathew Rowley.
