21-year-old weightlifter Cam McTaggart has broken three New Zealand records as he claimed a host of gold medals at the Pacific Games.

The U81kg lifter snatched 137kgs and clean and jerked 166kgs for a total of 303kgs.

“It was epic, the best I’ve lifted in a couple of years so I was really happy and feel like I’m on the up and up,” said McTaggart.

The lifts saw the Aucklander claim two Pacific Games golds and one silver. He also took gold in the Oceania Weightlifting Champs and bronze in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Champs which were run concurrently.

Ahead of competition McTaggart bet coach Richie Patterson that he would break the records, with Patterson agreeing to shave off his beard if his protégé was successful.
