New Zealands mens archery team had a memorable first day at the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Steve Clifton, Shaun Teasdale and Tony Waddick scored consistently well in the 72-shot round.
Their combined scores placed them third among the competing teams.
Clifton shot 702 (of a possible 720), the third best individual total of the day. Teasdale was below his best, but managed 699 and Southlander Waddick emerged as the real hero among the New Zealanders. The 32-year-old from Invercargill rose to the occasion, shooting 694, a remarkable 13-point personal best.
The New Zealand men have left themselves in a good position for the rest of the week. The points they scored today count towards both the individual and teams events.
Unfortunately the New Zealand women did not find their best form.
Stephanie Croskery totalled 679, which was the 12th highest score, while her team-mates Mandy McGregor (671) and Anne Mitchell (655) were further down the field.
