Road cyclist Patrick Bevin is expecting an “unpredictable” Olympic Games time trial.
The 30-year-old will be competing in his first Olympic Games in Tokyo and believes the heat and the course layout could throw up a few surprises.
“There’s a lot of balls to be juggled in Tokyo so I think the result sheet might surprise a few people. It’s going to be a mixed bag and I think a few guys ranked further down the field could really push for the podium on the day.”
Bevin only competes in a longer Olympic style time trial three or four times a year and is looking forward to his first foray at Olympic level.
“The beautiful thing about the time trial is there’s no hiding, no tactics it’s simply the fastest guy on the course.
“The course in Japan is hilly and it’s going to be hot so I’ve adjusted my training to prepare for that. I also think this course will be longer and harder than a lot of what we normally do.”
Bevin gave up his chance to ride on the Tour de France to focus on his Olympic preparation and says he can’t wait to represent his country and wear the fern.
“I’ll be going in and giving it my best shot. You don’t get a lot of chances to go to the Olympics so I’m pretty pumped for it.”
Bevin will also ride the road race alongside New Zealand teammate George Bennett.
The men’s time trial will be contested on July 28th.
