A remarkable bowling performance by Hayley Jensen highlighted New Zealand’s T20 cricket win over Sri Lanka.

After New Zealand had scored 147-7, Jensen opening the bowling and totally tied up the Sri Lankan batters. In four overs, Jensen conceded just five runs and also picked up the vital wicket of Chamari Atapatu, the cornerstone of the Sri Lankan batting.

Swinging the ball markedly, Jensen struck a good length and put the Sri Lankan innings under tremendous pressure.

New Zealand captain Sophie Devine said Jensen’s bowling was outstanding. “I think she’s a bit under-rated, but possibly not for much longer.”

In the New Zealand innings, Devine, 24, and Suzie Bates, 34, again got their team off to a good start. Brooke Halliday made a useful 22 and at the end of the innings fast bowler Lea Tahuhu smashed two 4s and a 6 in her quickfire 20 not out, which got New Zealand near their target of 150.

Tahuhu had a good all-round game because in her four overs she conceded just 14 runs, combining well with Jensen.

New Zealand have had two good victories so far, but their next match will be a step up when they take on home favourites England.
