Team kiwi had a fantastic day on the snow, track and ice today. Luger Matheson Hill had two training runs on the luge track at the Olympic Sliding Centre. He then went to watch alpine skier Harry Izard-Price on the giant slalom. Harry performed brilliantly on the slopes and placed 14th out of a large field of 65 athletes. Coach Jonathan Rice was "very very happy with the result." Conditions up at Kuhtai were windy, cold and cloudy. Unfortunately snowboarder Tim Herbert did not manage to land a clean run in the slope-style qualifying competition, finishing 10th and missing out on the semi-finals by one place. Ski-cross competitor Sam Andrews braved the windy condition and gave it his best on the course but finished at the back of a very experienced field. Athlete Support Adam Dooney says that `Sam had nothing left in the tank. I was really proud of him`. Biathlete Olivia Thomson trained with the Australian team and `clocked up ski miles`. She had a great time with our friendly neighbours. Olivia and coach/father Phil Thomson watched the mixed biathlon relay after Olivia`s grueling training session. Curling coaches Liz Matthews and Peter Becker had a busy day at the Exhibition Centre as every player has been paired with a player from another country for the mixed curling competition. Eleanor Adviento is thoroughly enjoying her new Swiss team mate and has already organised breakfast and lunch date meetings for team building. Our curlers will play in the knock out `mixed` curling pairs competition tomorrow, which involves pairing every athlete with a player from another National Olympic Committee from around the world. Kelsi Heath is paired up withThomas Scoffin of Canada (bronze medallist), Luke Steele is with Johanna Heldin of Sweden, David Weyer is teamed up with Denise Pimpini of Italy (silver medallist) and Eleanor Adviento is with Romano Meier of Switzerland (gold medallist). The curlers are looking forward to getting back on the ice again with their international friends and hoping to perform well and get into the medal finals. A large kiwi contingent came to support ice hockey skill players Callum Burns and Libby-Jean Hay. The atmosphere at the rink was electric and the competition was cut-throat. The competition constituted of ice hockey six skills. Callum won the final of the shooting accuracy skill, and impressively hit the ice hockey puck at a speed of 136km/h a pb for Callum! Callum finished 4th overall and only just missed out on a medal. Libby-Jean performed brilliantly during the passing precision skill and finished in second place. She finished in 8th place overall.
