Team New Zealand had one athlete competing today at the first winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria. Piera Hudson hit the slopes of Patscherkofel early this morning in the Giant Slalom comeptition. Conditions were perfect! Piera placed 21st in her first run and unfortunately a DNF in her second. There is one more alpine skiing event left for Piera to race on the 20 January before the Games end. Meanwhile, the rest of the team spent the day watching events and participating in the Culture and Education workshops. Curlers Luke Steele and David Weyer improved their interview skills after a fun and informative media workshop with Athlete Role Model Frankie Fredericks from Namibia. Frankie has won four silver medals in the 100m and 200m at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Young Ambassador Sarah van Ballekom thought that `Fredericks gave a real-life perspective on how to deal with the media in a confident and friendly manner`. Our female curlers Kelsi Heath and Eleanor Adviento joined the Urban Sports workshop today and loved every minute of it. Our curlers will play in the knock out `mixed` curling pairs competition tomorrow, which involves pairing every athlete with a player from another National Olympic Committee from around the world. Kelsi Heath is paired up withThomas Scoffin of Canada (bronze medallist), Luke Steele is with Johanna Heldin of Sweden, David Weyer is teamed up with Denise Pimpini of Italy (silver medallist) and Eleanor Adviento is with Romano Meier of Switzerland (gold medallist). The curlers are looking forward to getting back on the ice again with their international friends. After a training session up at Kuhtai, snowboarder Hamish Bagley participated the "Be the Chef" workshop today. He can now add a wonton recipie to his repertorie! Tomorrow is a busy day at the kiwi camp. Alpine skiier Harry Izard-Price has two runs on the giant slalom, snowboarder Tim Herbert will compete in the slopestyle competition, and ice hockey skills players Callum Burns and Libby-Jean Hay have their final at the rink.
