Ethan Dick was marginally satisfied after securing ninth place in the men’s all-around artistic gymnastics competition.

The New Zealander finished 11th in the same event at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and noted that ninth marked a slight improvement.

However, he clearly felt he’d let slip an opportunity to place considerably higher.

Dick was the only New Zealander in the individual all-around final after teammate Mikhail Koudinov was forced to withdraw with a hand injury.

Though he turned in an excellent performance on the pommel horse, where his 13.850 was third best, Dick was let down by his work on the floor especially, and the horizontal bar.

In the floor routine he scored just 11.450 for 16th position among the 18 starters.

Dick finished with a tally of 77.500 points. Englishman Jake Jarman won the gold medal with 83.450.

“I went alright,” said Dick. “I wanted to be cleaner on a few events.”

Dick said he was pleased with his work on the horse and also the parallel bars – he fell off the bars during qualifying and was much happier with his performance in the final.
