Lincoln Hurring won two silver medals at the Vancouver 1954 British Empire Games, in the 110 yards backstroke and in the 330 yards medley relay. He also competed in the 100m backstroke at the  1952 and 1956 Olympic Games. Later, Lincoln became a swimming coach together with his wife Jean. Once retiring from competitive swimming, Lincoln would provide commentary for the TV coverage of several Olympic games.

Lincoln was born in Dunedin and later married fellow Olympic team member and swimmer Jean Stewart, who won an Olympic bronze medal in the 100 metres backstroke in 1952. Their son, Gary Hurring also became an Olympic swimmer.
