New Zealand began to show improvement in the Winter Olympics arena, when a team of five led by Stuart Blakely went to Lake Placid. Scott Kendall, Mark Vryenhoek, Anna Archibald and Fiona Johnson made up the team and with the exception of Vryenhoek, who failed to finish an event, the rest did better than any other New Zealand team. Four skiers returned home with top 30 placings, while Blakely finished 32nd in the downhill, just 10 seconds slower than the winners.
