Glasgow 2014 was the 3rd Commonwealth Games for Richard and the most successful for the Auckland weightlifter. Richie won gold in the 85kg class, was named flagbearer for the closing ceremony and then married partner and fellow Commonwealth Games weightlifter, Phillipa Hale. 

Richie competed at the 2006 Melbourne Games and 2010 Delhi games where he placed 2nd. Richard has also competed at two Olympic games, Bejing in 2008 and London in 2012 where he placed 14th. Richie recently placed 1st at the 2014 Oceania Championship and his current Commonwealth Ranking is 1st for his division (85kg). Originally from a small farming district on the Manakau Peninsula, South West of Auckland, Richie attended Auckland Grammar as a boarding student from 1997-2001.

He has been competing in Olympic Weightlifting for 10 years, and currently trains full time at the Millennium Institute of Sport in Mairangi Bay. Richie has completed studies in sport management and coaching, owns his own crossfit gym and has a general interest in strength and conditioning coaching for elite athletes.
