Glasgow 2014 was the first Commonwealth Games for Julia, competing in the Hammer Throw event and extending New Zealand's throwing medals by earning silver.

The 21-year-old has been living and training in the United States at Princeton University, earning the NCAA title in the hammer throw earlier in 2014 before beginning her European campaign.

Julia has represented New Zealand at the 2009 Australian Youth Olympic Festival where she placed 1st. She has also represented New Zealand at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and again at the 2013 Summer University Games in Kazan.
