Attending his first Olympics, Snyders qualified as an individual for first time after being a key part of the medley relay team for past three years. He broke national records for breaststroke over all distances at the Olympic Trials. The South African born swimmer first broke into the NZ senior team for the World Championships in 2005. He won the B final at the World University Games last year.

New Zealanders couldn’t make an impression in today’s Olympic swimming heats. In the women’s 50m freestyle heats, Hayley Palmer was timed at 25.47s, which placed her 23rd of the field of 73.
