A team of 50 young New Zealand athletes has arrived in Nanjing, China set to compete at the Youth Olympic Games which kick off in just two days time.

The New Zealand athletes, aged between 14 and 18 years old, are set to compete in 15 sports including three-on-three basketball, golf, swimming, athletics and hockey. The games include a culture and education programme in addition to a comprehensive sport programme and are designed to provide invaluable preparation and inspiration for young athletes.

New Zealand Olympic Committee CEO Kereyn Smith says the Youth Olympic Games are a definite step in the athletes preparation for elite level competition.

Theyre competing against top athletes from around the world and also experiencing the atmosphere and challenges of an Olympic Games. The athletes will live in an Olympic-style athletes village, take part in formal Opening and Closing ceremonies and meet athletes from different nationalities and sports.

Smith added that the culture and education programme will also enable the young athletes to learn about what it means to be a top athlete, mentored by those that have gone before them including New Zealands own Olympic gold medallist Lisa Carrington.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist weightlifter Richie Patterson will also be on-hand to provide advice, forming part of the New Zealand Olympic Teams support staff.

The Nanjing Youth Olympic Games open on August the 16th and conclude August 23rd.
