Valerie Adams has proven her strength again after winning the World Championship held this year in Daegu, South Korea for a third consecutive time. Adams beat Belarus rival Nadzeya Ostapchuk after heaving an exceptional 21.24m throw, which was an astounding 1.19m further than Ostapchuk who came in second. For Adams it was a personal best but also broke the national and Oceanic record and equalled the world record throw set by Natalia Lisovskaya of the Soviet Union in 1987. The proud accomplishment showed on Adams as she held a hand written note from her coach, who could not be there, and waved the New Zealand flag after her victory. Adams coach, Jean-Pierre Egger, was in Switzerland at the time but had left words of encouragement by asking her to throw as long as possible until you reach the stars. There is no doubt Adams was thinking about Eggers words when she won as she help up a photo of him and pointed saying that he did it for me. Adams is just the second women to have won the event three times- the first was German Astrid Kumbernuss. Although Adams had a strong finish her first throw was average with a distance of 19.37m starting her in fourth place. A fouled second put left her on shaky ground but she managed to come back in the third round and hold on to it for the win. Adams went there with the mind to win but knew she had it in her for the record breaking 21m throw as well. The goal was to win but I knew I had 21m in me, so I couldn't finish the competition without trying to break that mark. I spoke to my coach Jean-Pierre after the meet and he said it was a really nice throw technically, Adams said. After a tough year in 2010 Adams was glad to be able to come home with a win. ''I'm very proud to have pulled it off for our small country,'' she said.
