New Zealanders Marcus Daniell and Michael Venus went within a whisker of causing an upset in the first round of the men’s tennis doubles.

The New Zealanders struck a tough draw, meeting the Canadian Davis Cup pairing of David Nestor and Vasek Pospisil in the first round.

But the New Zealanders, serving big and playing aggressively, took the match to the seventh-seeded Canadians and won the first set 6-4. They lost the second 6-3 but in the third were within a couple of points of sealing the match. They led 5-4 and 6-5.

The ensuing tiebreaker could hardly have been closer, before the Canadians won it 8-6.
