After only two years of competitive weightlifting, Aucklander Lou Guinares created a small slice of New Zealand weightlifting history on todays opening day of the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
Guinares, just 20, set a total of six New Zealand records junior and senior while lifting in the 56kg class.
The Philippines-born Guinares snatched 94kg and lifted 124kg in the clean and jerk, for a total of 218kg. This placed him seventh overall, though well behind Amirul Hamizan Ibrahim of Malaysia, whose winning total was 257kg.
Guinares was understandably thrilled with his performance, saying he had loved the experience of competing in a Commonwealth Games.
