Ryan Taylor bowed out of the Olympic 50m rifle prone competition at London's Royal Artillery Barracks today. Taylor, 32, finished with a total of 592 points from his six qualifying rounds. He would have needed 595, which proved to be the cut-off score for finalists. The Levin man began promisingly despite the gusty conditions, peeling off totals of 100, 99, 99. However his form wavered and he finished with 98, 97, 98 to fall out of contention. There was some hot scoring in the rifle prone event the leading qualifier was veteran Belarusian Sergei Martynov, who recorded the perfect score of 600, only the second shooter to achieve perfection in the event. Behind him, Belgian Lionel Cox had five 100s and a 99. Taylor had to battle hard to gain Olympic selection. He was initially omitted in favour of trap shooter Natalie Rooney, but the decision was overturned by the Sports Tribunal and Taylor was given Oceanias shooting spot at the games.
