The New Zealand women's rugby sevens team completed a good first day’s work in their Olympic Games campaign when they outplayed Spain 31-5.

Sarah Goss’s team had earlier proved far too strong for Kenya, winning 52-0.

The New Zealanders have one more pool match remaining, against France tomorrow, and will then move into quarter-finals.

The Spaniards were no match for the well-drilled New Zealand side. Kayla McAlister ran in two tries, and Portia Woodman, Tyla Nathan-Wong and Theresa Fitzpatrick one each. Nathan-Wong kicked three of her five conversion attempts.

For Spain, Maria Casado scored three minutes into the second spell, the first points New Zealand conceded all day.

New Zealand, who played throughout with pace and flair, led 12-0 at halftime.
