Some of the worlds top rowers have begun converging in Bled ahead of the 2011 World Rowing Championships which is the first and main rowing Olympic Qualification event for London 2012. A record 68 nations are attending the World Rowing Championships in Bled this year with over 1,200 athletes ready to compete for a spot in the London 2012 Games. The most popular and highly contested event looks to be the mens single sculls with a total of 36 nations entered, closely followed by the light weight mens double with 34 countries being represented. New Zealand will have strong contenders in the mens and womens single sculls with Mahe Drysdale and Emma Twigg competing for a spot on the Olympic Team. Twigg is looking strong as she has just come out of the 2011 Samsung World Rowing Cup with a win in the final stage of the regatta. The mens pairs also bodes strong competitors for New Zealand with Hamish Bond and Eric Murray ready to continue their domination of the event. The duo has won nine consecutive races over the last three years and seems to have the edge over their British rivals Peter Reed and Andrew Triggs-Hodge. There are a total of 14 Olympic events on offer at the World Rowing Championships in Bled which will run from August 28 to September 4, 2011.
