The New Zealand campaign is not all centred at the official Olympic Village here in the docklands of East London. This week the key New Zealand support staff travelled to Weymouth on the south coast of England for the official welcome ceremony for the sailing team. The sailors have their official satellite village at Weymouth, close to the sailing base, and the renowned Solent which has witnessed so many sailing battles from the Admirals Cup to the famous Cowes Week. Chef de Mission Dave Currie and former Olympian Chantal Brunner, a member of the Athlete Services Team, spent two days at Weymouth with the team. The support team now turn their attentions west of London to the satellite village for rowing and canoe sprint at Eton Dorney in Buchinghamshire. They will spend the next two days setting up the New Zealand part of that satellite base as well as the rowers day-base house which is closer to the rowing facilities on Dorney Lake which is a superb rowing and flat water kayak venue based in 450 acres of parkland near the quintessential English school of Eton and the royal household of Windsor. Chef de Mission Dave Currie said they are keen to ensure that both of these villages have the same kiwi theme and support and will be providing daily communications with both teams at these venues. The rowers come into their village at the weekend while the sailors are now populating their base in readiness for competition.
