The New Zealand Olympic Committee is inviting leaders of Olympic and Commonwealth Sport to share their views on what is needed to succeed in todays high performance environment. Olympic Ambassador and Olympic Athletes Commission Member Barbara Kendall will lead a panel discussion that will take place at the New Zealand Olympic Committees General Assembly tomorrow (Wed 11 May). She will be joined on the panel by Bike NZ High Performance Director Mark Elliott and Netball New Zealand CEO Raelene Castle. New Zealand Olympic Committee Secretary General Kereyn Smith says the panel is designed to encourage open and frank discussion between heads of National Sporting Organisations. The New Zealand high performance environment is going through a period of significant change, she said. The New Zealand Olympic Committee is bringing sport leaders together at the General Assembly and will encourage them to share their views on what New Zealand needs to achieve success. The invitation to sport leaders comes as representatives from the New Zealand Olympic Committee, SPARC and the Academies of Sport and National Sporting Organisations examine the role and structure of a new high performance environment in New Zealand. We are supportive of the governments commitment to developing a more effective and streamlined high performance structure, said Ms Smith. As an independent, athlete-focused organisation, we are delighted to be able to provide a forum in which sporting leaders, joined by our athlete commission representatives, can discuss what New Zealand needs to succeed in international sport. Ms Smith said the views of sports will be presented to her colleagues on the High Performance working group, established to manage the transition to the new environment. The New Zealand Olympic Committees 99th General Assembly takes place in Wellington on Wednesday 11 May. The General Assembly also includes an update from the Chairman of the SPARC and the SPARC High Performance Board, Paul Collins and a presentation from CEO of MFAT Tony Allen.
