Olympian Mark Weldon and current NZX chief executive will head the Government's fundraising efforts for the Christchurch earthquake appeal. Weldon will be taking a four-six week leave of absence from the stock exchange to take on the new role. Mark Weldon swam for New Zealand at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Sport is a force for good and the earthquake has given a number of Olympians an opportunity to help out. Other New Zealand Olympians who have provided assistance for the earthquake include Danyon Loader who donated gear to be auctioned as well as taking the plunge at Aucklands Milford Beach along with 650 swimmers of all ages in the Swim For Christchurch. Nick Willis also organised a fundraising track meet to help the people of Christchurch after Tuesdays devastating earthquake, Fans were asked to donate money to the Salvation Armys Christchurch Earthquake Relief fund and raised over $20,000.
