Brent Newdick battled hard to lift himself into the top half of the decathlon field when the second half of his event got under way at the Olympic Stadium today. Newdick, who began the second day in 20th place, didnt have the best of 110m hurdles races, hitting several barriers solidly. However, he pressed on and finished with a time of 15.02s not too bad in the circumstances. In the discus, the 27-year-old Auckland-based athlete had a first throw of 46.15m, followed by two no-throws. Newdicks discus throw was the eighth-best of the competition and lifted him into 16th place of the 31 who started the decathlon. In Newdicks eighth event, the pole vault, he cleared 4.70m, to maintain his place in the field. The javelin and the gruelling 1500m will be held later today. London 1908 Olympic Summer Games
