New Zealand’s next generation of sporting stars are about to make their way to Buenos Aires for the Youth Olympic Games.

Team Chef de Mission Barbara Kendall is on the ground and has been in the Youth Olympic Village preparing for the 61 New Zealand athletes to arrive.

“They’ve done a really good job with the village. They’ve had quite a bit of time to make sure everything is working and they’ve put in a lot of work to make everything look good.

“Now we just need to keep setting up our spaces with furniture, flags, posters and things like that, just making sure everything is there. We also have to test the transport.

The athlete arrivals begin on October 2nd with the swimming team the first in for New Zealand.

The weather has been wet over the past few days but it’s forecast to clear up for the rest of the week.

“We’re excited for the team to see the village and what we have done with the Kiwi space,” said Kendall.

“We’ve also tested out the food court and tried the local steak which was delicious, I think the athletes will be spending a lot of time there post competition!”

The Youth Olympic Games is run by the International Olympic Committee and will be the third summer youth Games, following those in Singapore in 2010 and Nanjing in 2014.

The Games are a pre-elite development opportunity for the world's most promising young athletes, allowing them to experience a multi-sport games environment while exposing them to learning and cultural opportunities and helping them on the performance pathway.
