Sam Meech continued his great start in the laser sailing competition today.

After two days, Meech is in third place and within sight of the leaders.

In the first race today he finished well to claim fifth and he followed that performance with a solid sixth.

After four races Meech has 13 points, behind leader Julio Alsogaray of Argentina on seven.

Meech was pleased he got away to two good starts today.

“It was a good day - I went the right way most of the time, so that was good,” he said.

“But it’s day two and it’s a long regatta so I can’t get too excited about it yet. Hopefully I’ll be in the same position on the last day and then I’ll be excited.”

He said he knew coming in this would be a tricky venue.

“In all the regattas we’ve done here so far, you see all the top guys coming away with big scores, so you know whoever can be the most consistent and not get as many of the big ones is going to be looking good at the end of the week.”

The news wasn’t quite as good for New Zealand finn sailor Josh Junior, whose competition started today.

Junior was 18th in a field of 23 in the first race and was disqualified in the second race for crossing the start line early.

“It didn’t go so well for me I ended up with one near the back and then unfortunately got a UFD disqualification in the second race, so not a good day, but there’s still five or six more days to go.”
