In celebrations to mark One Year to Go until the start of London 2012 Summer Olympic Games will include the unveiling of the Olympic medals to be awarded next year at a special event in Trafalgar Square, London. The design of the medals will be the most eagerly awaited event of the evening, which will also be attended by International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge, who will join London Mayor Boris Johnson and London 2012 chairman Lord Sebastian Coe. The medals will be made from metal from Utah Copper mine in Salt Lake City and the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia and be cast in the UK by Royal Mint. "The one year to go mark is London's invitation to the world to come to the Games in the summer of 2012," said Coe. "It is a chance to look forward to the next 12 months, a crucial time for the athletes who want to take part, for the organisers to test venues and build excitement through moments such as the Torch Relay and of course sports fans all over the world, who will be looking forward to a world class festival of sport next summer. Said Coe. "The countdown to London 2012 is on, we share in the excitement with London - and our athletes will make us proud come the games which start this time next year." Chef de Mission Dave Currie says. "With the London Games just a year away this ceremony marks the most important milestone to date on the journey to the London Games. Athletes and fans alike will be keen to see what the London Olympic medals will look like." says Currie. "With the venues nearly all complete and London prepared to welcome the world on 26 July 2012 we believe all NZ visitors and athletes can experience an amazing Games wherever they are in the world whether it be at home in NZ at home or at a live site or in London at our Kiwi House or in the stadiums and Olympic venues.
