The London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) showcased what the manufacturing techniques were involved in creating the 8,000 Olympic Torches to be carried by inspirational Torchbearers this summer. About 110 Torches a day will be carried through 1,000 UK communities. The Premier Group in Coventry was in charge of manufacturing. The Torches symbolise the very best of British design, engineering and manufacturing talent. The Torch's triangular, gold-coloured form is perforated by 8,000 circles representing the 8,000 Torches. The Torches will weigh about one kilogram and will be 800mm high. LOCOG Chair Seb Coe said: The very best of contemporary British design, engineering and manufacturing techniques are encapsulated in the London 2012 Olympic Torch. Our 8,000 Torchbearers will each carry a Torch with pride as they show the world the Olympic spirit is alive and well across the UK in the run up to the start of the Olympic Games. A number of techniques is used to create, assemble and finish the Olympic Torches. Laser cutting is used to create the four pieces that make up the main body and the precise circular holes and a specialist pressing tool develops the triangular form. The final stage of the manufacturing process sees the Torch coated with a special gold-coloured finish with the ability to withstand the temperature of the Olympic Flame. The emblem of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will be added on the front of the Torch. The Olympic Torch Relay will be presented by Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, and will start on 19 May in Lands End.
