The London 2012 Olympics medals have been unveiled by Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal and London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) Chair Seb Coe at Trafalgar Square marking one year to go until the Games. The design for the medals has been created by British Artist David Watkins after a panel of members from the Victory Ceremonies LOCOG team, LOCOG Athletes Committee and the British Museums Keeper of Coins and Medals Phillip Attwood chose him saying his design was best fitting to the athletes achievements. The design has incorporated features that represent a metaphor for the Modern City, a symbol of the athletes efforts and includes the River Thames representing London with a square to reinforce this sense of place as in a map. The front of the medal always depicts the same imagery at the summer Games the Greek Goddess of Victory, Nike, stepping out of the depiction of the Parthenon to arrive in the Host City. It is the pinnacle of a sporting career to become an Olympic champion but I am confident that receiving one of these medals will make it all the more special in London next year. Congratulations to LOCOG for creating a design that will inspire the Olympians of 2012, IOC President Jacques Rogge said. Around 200 New Zealand athletes will have the chance to compete for one of these medals when they travel over to the Games next year and Kiwis are being encouraged to do some designing of their own for the New Zealand Olympic team by designing a t-shirt for them to wear while at the Games.
