Andrea Miller won a rare Commonwealth Games hurdles medal for New Zealand in Delhi today.

Miller, 28, steamed home to grab the bronze medal in the 100m hurdles, a race won by her training companion and good friend Sally Pearson of Australia.

After injuries during the season, Miller was short of races on arriving in Delhi, but has hit very good form. She ran impressively in qualifying and her time today, 13.25s, was her seasons best.

The Gold Coast-based athlete said she had a sneaking suspicion she might finish third or fourth today.

On rankings I was probably sixth in that field, but I knew after how well I ran in the heat that I had a chance of a medal, she said.

Im absolutely stoked. I was a bit slow to get going, but am wrapt with how I came home.

Miller picked up a couple of places over the final few metres. She did not know shed won a medal until her name flashed up on the giant scoreboard.

When youre running well, you block out everything else and just focus on your own race. I did that today. When I finished I wasnt sure of my position.

Pearson won in 12.67s, a games record. Canadian Angela Whyte was a clear second in 12.98s and Miller just edged out Andrea Bliss of Jamaica and Aleesha Barber of Trinidad, who both ran 13.28s.

Meanwhile in the delayed 200m womens final, New Zealander Monique Williams, saddled with the unfavoured lane No 9, came home sixth in a sluggish 23.71s.

The final was to have been run last night, but a disqualification and appeal, and a lane redraw dragged out and the race had to be held over, which is most unusual for a major track and field meet.

Cydonie Mothersill of the Caymans won in 22.89s.
