Phil Burrows set a record today for the most test hockey caps by a New Zealander, but it wasnt a day to remember for the Black Sticks captain.

Burrows played his 252nd match for New Zealand, surpassing the previous record, held by Ryan Archibald, and he scored a goal, too. But any joy at reaching the milestone was negated by his teams 5-3 loss to England in a vital Commonwealth Games mens pool match.

"It's a pretty proud moment, but I'd definitely trade it for a win," said Burrows, 30.

The game was expected to be close England are ranked two places ahead of New Zealand in the world standings. However, on the day Englands stickwork and ability to manufacture goals gave them a clear advantage.

The New Zealanders have one more pool match, against Canada tomorrow, and will probably need to win it to assure themselves of a place in the semi-finals.

For England, forward James Tindall scored three goals.

The New Zealand cause wasnt helped by losing Hayden Shaw to a yellow card early in the second half, but Shaw did his best to redeem himself with two goals, courtesy of his dragflick specialty.

New Zealand trailed 3-2 at halftime.
