A merger of SPARCs (Sport and Recreation New Zealand) high performance unit, the NZ Academy of Sport North Island and the NZ Academy of Sport South Island has recently come about to produce High Performance Sport New Zealand (HPSNZ), a new subsidiary of SPARC charged with making New Zealand one of the most successful sporting nations in the world. Alongside their responsibilities of developing and supporting the countrys elite athletes, they will also continue to build a network of world-class training facilities in partnership with the private sector to help ensure the growth of New Zealand athletes on the world stage. Acting Chief Executive Martin Toomey is excited by this amazing opportunity to shape New Zealands sporting history and has no doubt that HPSNZ will be a success, and that New Zealand will become recognised as one of the worlds most successful sporting nations. Although the transition into a new organisation is a significant process, HPSNZ are making every effort to ensure that they are still focused on the athletes, coaches and NSOs with the merge taking place over a period of three months in order to minimise any disruptions. We look forward to seeing the results of the new HPSNZ subsidiary as New Zealand athletes continue to exceed expectations in the London Prepares Test events and World Championship series around the world in the lead up to the all-important London Olympic Games next year.
