The New Zealand Commonwealth Games Team flagbearer will be announced tonight by Dave Currie. The flagbearer is traditionally announced at the official team function on the eve of the Games. It is a great honour to carry the New Zealand flag into the stadium at an Opening Ceremony. Many of the finest names in New Zealand sport have led teams into the Opening Ceremony. There is general excitement for the Opening Ceremony, but for those competing the next day they will not be attending. For the first time in 80 years of the Commonwealth Games, athletes will be allowed to catch most of the opening ceremony spectacle first hand when the event begins at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi on Sunday as they will do the team marches first, so they can then enjoy the Opening Ceremony festivities. New Zealand will be one of 71 countries participating in the Opening Ceremony. The Delhi Games are the first in which athletes will march into the stadium during the opening segment of the ceremony and be seated to watch the rest. The Opening Ceremony starts at 7pm (Delhi Time). This can be watched in New Zealand on SKY TV on SKY Sport channels 1-8 and free to view on Prime. Meanwhile most athletes have arrived and are impressed and enjoying the games village. The atmosphere in the village is good and there is a buzz in many areas such as the dining hall. Training is underway for athletes at the training venues.
