New Zealanders enjoyed another successful afternoon in the pool today, with five swimmers qualifying for finals tomorrow.

Daniel Bell excelled in qualifying third in the 100m backstroke in 54.38s, while team-mate Gareth Kean, already a silver medallist in the 200m backstroke, swam in the same race and qualified sixth in 55.26s.

Hayley Palmer, who has swum impressively in Delhi, qualified second in the 50m freestyle in 25.11s.

Glenn Snyders, endeavouring to bounce back from his disappointment in the 100m breaststroke yesterday, was the equal fastest qualifier alongside South African Cameron van der Burgh, the world record-holder, in the 50m breaststroke. Both swam 27.86s.

The fifth New Zealander to progress was Emily Thomas, who was seventh qualifier in the womens 50m backstroke, in 28.85s.

Of those who failed to book a spot in finals, most attention focused on Moss Burmester, a bronze medallist in the 100m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games four years ago. Burmester could manage just 54.44s today and just missed out on the final.
