Former New Zealand Olympic Chef de Mission was awarded a New Zealand Olympic Order today.

Currie led the New Zealand team for a decade, managing the 2002, 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games teams and the 2004, 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams, as well as the New Zealand team at the 2000 Sydney Paralympics.

Elected by the New Zealand Olympic Committee members in recognition for outstanding service, Currie was acknowledged for his contribution to a strong sense of unity and team spirit, calling on a strong sense of pride in New Zealand culture and the advice and mentorship of previous Olympic greats, including Sir Murray Halberg.

He consistently lobbied on behalf of athletes within the Olympic Movement and we were delighted to see the athletes march first into the Olympic Stadium in Sochi earlier this year. The primary place of athletes in the Opening Ceremony had been strongly advocated for by Currie throughout his tenure.

From a figure head position, Currie redefined the role of Chef de Mission and has left a strong legacy for others to follow.

Currie had been recommended to the General Assembly by the board of the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
