Shaye Boddington was below her best in the final of the women’s 1m springboard dive tonight, finishing 12 of the finalists.

Boddington had an erratic series. Her sequence was 50.40, 37.95, 42.90, 19.50, 43.75, with a total of 194.50. Obviously she was let down by a poor fourth dive.

The gold medal was won by Scot Grace Reid, who totalled 275.30.

Boddington earlier qualified for the final with a total of 237.95, which placed her ninth of those moving into the final. “She said she had dived “safely” and looked for consistency.

New Zealand’s other entrant in the 1m springboard, Lizzie Cui missed out on a qualifying position when she totally muffed her fourth dive and recorded a score of 0. Given even an average score, she would have qualified comfortably.

“I slipped off the board,” Cui explained. “There was a bit of glare from the sun, and I missed my step. I was shocked at what happened. It was hard to do on TV and with everyone watching, but all I can do is move forward.

“I know that the reason I missed out on qualifying wasn’t because of the quality of my diving. It was just one of those things that can happen in sport.”

Cui, 20, is a well-performed diver with experience at the Rio Olympics and two world championships. She said she hoped to atone in the 3m springboard competition tomorrow.
